Traeger Sauce Taste Test at Bill & Rod’s Appliance: Whiskey Hog & Texas Spicy
The Bill & Rod’s Appliance family are big fans of the sauces and rubs for making the mealtime more exciting. The Traeger sauces and rubs come in a variety of styles, and we are determined to try them all and let you know what we like about them. On our testing days we bring out our Traeger wood pellet grill and cook up some chicken for the taste test. Prior to the testing we post the days and what sauces or rubs we will be testing and would love to have you stop by and give your opinion.
Here are the sauces that we checked out:
Whiskey Hog: Traeger teamed up with WhistlePig Whiskey to create this bold BBQ sauce. It is described as “smooth-yet-bold” and that is what we found as well. You can pick up on the whisky notes, but they are not overpowering. This flavor is blended with sweet maple and a touch of smoke. There was a strong punch of tangy barbeque as well.
We enjoyed this on the chicken and even used it on smoked ham for a delightful sandwich. Our testers pointed out how great it would be for pulled pork or pork tenderloin. All around it received a thumbs up from our team.
Traeger suggests pairing with the Whiskey Dust Rub and the Whiskey Barrel Blend of Pellets, which they created when collaborating with WhistlePig Whiskey.
Texas Spicy: Traeger wants to help you add some kick to your next outdoor cooking adventure. This has a strong peppery heat, but it does not overpower the Traeger BBQ tang. As with everything BBQ, there is a hint of smoke. It has a thinner consistency and works well as a marinade for some slow cook.
We enjoyed this on chicken breast and have used this on chicken wings. Our testers agreed that this would be good for a Texas style pulled pork or ribs. Most liked it, but others found it a bit spicy for them.
Traeger suggests pairing with Prime Rib Rub, Anything Rub or Coffee Rub. The best choice for pellets when cooking with the Texas Spicy sauce is the Signature Blend of Hardwood Pellets.
