Do Not Self Clean Your Oven Before the Holiday Season!

The air is getting crisp, the scent of leaves fills the air, and our bodies instinctively begin to nest. We crave comfort, hearty foods, and sumptuous baked goods. It seems like a great time to self-clean the oven, but DON’T DO IT! Here at Bill & Rod’s Appliance, Inc. our appliance repair department have seen time and again where the self-clean turn into self-destruct.

The high heat from the oven, mixed with the length of time it is cooking off the interior, there can be a tendency to burn up sensors, control boards and thermostats. Often, these components are in short supply and may not arrive before the holidays. That means no oven for baking, roasting, or cooking in general.

Here at Bill & Rod’s Appliance, we have a solution to help tidy up your oven without killing it! A simple mix, that is placed in a baking dish, and then warmed at a low temperature in the oven will loosen grime that can be then wiped out for a cleaner oven.

The Recipe:

  • Add water to a 9” by 13” baking dish
  • Take 2 lemons, slice them, and squeeze the juice into the baking dish
  • Place the baking dish in the oven
  • Set oven to 400⁰F with the door closed
  • Watch the water until you see it begins a rolling boil, turn off the oven, and allow to cool with the dish inside.
  • Once cooled, wipe down the interior

At this point, save the lemon water mixture. It can then be used to clean the glass on the door.

Window Cleaner:

  • Use 1/4 cup of the lemon water used in the steaming of the oven
  • Add baking soda to the water till you have a paste. It should be able to spread but not be watery
  • Spread over the window of the door
  • Let the paste sit for 15-20 minutes
  • Wipe away with a damp cloth

Follow these steps this holiday season for a cleaner, happier holiday season. If catastrophe does happen to your oven be sure to give Bill & Rod’s Appliance’s appliance repair department a call at 734-425-5040 to schedule an appointment for one of our expert service technicians to come to your home.
