How to Determine the Correct Water Temperature for Laundry Day

Are you ever confused on what wash temperature to use on your laundry? Over the years there seems to have been a loss of the art of washing clothing to their optimal levels. Below is a guide on how to choose the best washing temperature based on the clothing you are washing.

Hot Water Wash:

Hot water is the most effective temperature setting for cleaning. However, it is not recommended for all fabric types. This temperature should be used on sturdy whites and colorfast items, heavy work clothes, and cloth diapers. It is the best cleaning for items soiled by oil, grease, or ink.

Warm Water Wash:

The warm water is useful for providing a thorough cleaning on light and moderately soiled clothing without causing damage and less fading of colors with fabrics. Warm water also reduces wrinkling in permanent press and knitted clothing. On some washers it is even offered in the rinse cycle. This temperature should be used with non-colorfast or dark colors, permanent press clothing, silks, woolens, nylon, and acrylic fabrics.

Cold Water Wash:

The cold water is the ideal for delicate items. Its cleaning abilities are not as great as hot or warm water washes but is useful for colors that bleed easily or sensitive fabrics. This temperature for washing will save energy over the others by not having to heat the water. You will also find that wrinkling and shrinking is reduced

A Note On Water Temperatures

When selecting colder temperatures please make note of how it will interact with detergents. As temperatures of water drop below 60°F detergents become less effective at dissolving. This will result in a less effective cleaning and in some cases cause more lint residue to form. It is with this in mind that we at Bill & Rod’s Appliance recommend that you avoid the “Tap Cold” water setting in the winter in the northern states. Using a washer that has automatic temperature control will monitor temperatures and adjust to ensure the temperature will effectively breakdown the detergent.
