Can I Put My Old Refrigerator in the Garage?
Often, here at Bill & Rod’s Appliance we have clients that ask if they can put their old refrigerator in the garage and there was a time when this was a common practice. It was so convenient to replace your refrigerator in your kitchen and then have extra storage in the garage for overflow. Now, we are here to tell you that is no longer the case. Today you must have a refrigerator that can be retrofitted for the garage, or it must come that way from the factory.
Why can’t current models be placed in the garage?
Most manufacturers have guidelines for temperatures where the unit will effectively run. Given the temperature swings in our garages here in Michigan this makes for an environment that is ineffective for keeping the refrigerator running. The ideal temperatures for operation are 50⁰F to 110⁰F.
When the temperature drops below 50⁰F the thermostats are tricked into thinking that the interior is cold enough. The compressor will then turn off and cooling will stop. This will cause the freezer to melt down and thaw out. The fresh food section will grow warmer as well spoiling everything inside.
When the temperature exceeds 110⁰F overworks the compressor. One of two things will then happen at this point. First, the fresh food section will begin to freeze, ruining veggies and possibly exploding sealed beverages. Second, the compressor can give up then everything will spoil that is being kept in the refrigerator.
What is the alternative to putting the refrigerator in the garage?

What options are there for a garage refrigerator?
Many manufacturers build garage ready refrigerators and freezers. Frigidaire offers the widest selection of refrigerators and freezers in various sizes and configurations that range from 12cuft to 22cuft capacity. GE Appliances has 18cuft capacity refrigerators and variously sized freezers to choose from that are garage ready. The Whirlpool Corporation offers a line called Gladiator that comes garage ready. These are only configured as all refrigerator or all freezer and come matte black with a foot pedal to open the doors.
