Have you heard about Craft Ice from LG? It is a novel way to get ice and is something different that you look for with your next refrigerator. This specialty ice is about a 2-inch spere and made in a second icemaker in your freezer. Designed to melt slower and can be used for craft cocktails, bourbons, scotch, or in many homes to fill up a water bottle more effectively.
Each batch of the craft ice take about 24 hours to produce. A standard batch of this ice is 3 round shaped pieces. You do have the option of increasing that to 6 pieces every 24 hours, but the clarity of the ice drops. Clarity determines how quickly the ice will melt and the less clear the ice, the faster it will melt. The bin where the ice is collected stores 20-30 pieces at one time.
What should be expected with the Craft Ice? Do not expect to see perfect spheres of ice like you would at a craft cocktail bar. The process to get the large balls of ice they have are labor intensive and the necessary devices to make this happen cannot be put into a residential freezer… yet. Below you will see what the ice typically looks like. While there is a very nice, rounded shape there is a flat spot from the top of the ice mold. The ice itself is not incredibly clear either, still more clear than standard ice from LG icemakers. This can vary depending on your water quality as well.

The space that is taken up in the freezer is valuable space if this is your main refrigerator. Nearly a third of the top drawer in the bottom freezer and about fifth of the total space in the side-by-side models.
